What You'll Find
Carrickfergus Castle is a brilliant one for little adventurers who love knights, castles and a bit of history! Sitting right beside Belfast Lough, it's one of Northern Ireland's most famous castles, and there's plenty to explore inside.
The castle is over 800 years old, and the huge stone walls and towers are impressive before you've even stepped through the entrance!
Inside, the kids can explore the old castle rooms, discover what life was like hundreds of years ago and imagine what it would have been like to live in a real medieval fortress.
There's a great hall, historic displays and plenty of interesting corners to explore. Look out for the cannons and defensive features around the castle too. They're a great way to get children interested in how castles were protected all those years ago.
One of the most interesting parts is the castle keep, the large stone tower at the heart of the fortress. It's worth taking your time as you wander around, as there's plenty to spot in the old stonework and historic rooms.
And don't forget to look out across Belfast Lough! The castle sits right beside the water, with lovely views from the grounds and surrounding area.
It's not a huge attraction that will take all day, but it's a lovely one for children who enjoy exploring somewhere a little different.
Once you've finished at the castle, you can take a wander along Carrickfergus seafront or head into the town for lunch or an ice cream.
