What You'll Find
Headhunters is one of those places that sounds unlikely and turns out to be genuinely lovely. It's a working barber shop on Darling Street in Enniskillen with a railway museum inside it, and admission to the museum is free.
You start at a reconstructed booking office, where you're handed a ticket and invited on board, and from there the exhibits follow the railways of Fermanagh and the border counties up to the closure of the lines in 1957. There's a Station Master's Office, a Ladies Waiting Room and a Signal Cabin to look into, plus uniforms, signalling instruments, lamps, signs, tableware, timetables, tickets and photographs from the Great Northern Railway, the Sligo Leitrim & Northern Counties Railway and the Clogher Valley Railway.
It's a small collection but a really good one, and it holds children's attention because it's full of things to point at. If someone needs a haircut while you're in, even better.
Wee Ones Will Love...
- ✓Being handed a ticket at the booking office and shown on board
- ✓Looking at the signal instruments, lamps and old tickets
- ✓Peering into the Station Master's Office and the Signal Cabin
- ✓Spotting the railway signs and photographs on the walls
Before You Visit
Admission to the museum is free, and opening times are worth checking before you travel on 028 6632 7488.
It's a real barber shop with customers in it, so this is a quiet-voices sort of visit rather than a run-around one.
Half an hour covers it comfortably.
⭐ Wee Adventurers Top Tips
- ⭐It's a short visit, so pair it with something else in town rather than travelling for it alone
- ⭐It's a few minutes' walk from Enniskillen Castle and Forthill Park, so it slots into a town day easily
- ⭐Ask the children to spot the three railway companies on the displays
