What You'll Find
Killykeegan is a quiet little nature reserve at the foot of Cuilcagh, and it's the one to know about if you're heading for the boardwalk with younger children, or if you simply want a short, easy walk.
It sits within the Marlbank National Nature Reserve, inside the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark, and the landscape here is limestone, which is rare in Northern Ireland and found only in this corner of west Fermanagh. There's a 900-metre looped gravel trail with interpretation along the way, an interpretative centre covering the local history and folklore, and views across the reserve's meadows and rocky pavement.
In summer the meadows are full of butterflies, moths and dragonflies, and if you're lucky you might spot an Irish hare. It's free to visit and open all year, with free parking, toilets and picnic areas.
Wee Ones Will Love...
- ✓A 900-metre loop that's just the right length for small legs
- ✓Looking for butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies in the meadows
- ✓Spotting the limestone pavement, which looks like something from another planet
- ✓A picnic at the tables by the car park
Before You Visit
Free, and open all year. Parking and toilets are free too, but check the current car park and toilet opening times before you visit, as they can close earlier than the reserve itself.
Dogs are welcome on a lead. The reserve is grazed by cattle and there are crevices and dips in the limestone, so keep an eye on where everyone is walking.
There's a 2-metre height barrier at the car park entrance, so taller vans and some motorhomes won't fit through.
⭐ Wee Adventurers Top Tips
- ⭐Use it as the free parking base for the Cuilcagh Boardwalk, then do the loop when you get back
- ⭐Slow down on the limestone pavement, it's the unusual bit and easy to walk straight past
- ⭐Bring a picnic rather than planning around a cafe, there isn't one here
