What You'll Find
Killard National Nature Reserve protects a wild stretch of Lecale coastline at the mouth of Strangford Lough, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You reach it on foot from the layby at Mill Quarter Bay, where the Killard Road loop leaves the A2 between Strangford and Ardglass, and a path follows the shore on around the headland.
The walking is rugged shoreline and grassy paths, with sandy bays that make good picnic spots. Birdlife is the draw here, and seals are often seen offshore too. This is a nature reserve rather than a park, so there's no play equipment and nothing to buy — just open sea views, a lot of sky and a genuine sense of somewhere left alone.

Before You Visit
Entry is free. The entrance is at Mill Quarter Bay on the Killard Road, a scenic loop road off the A2 just south of Strangford, heading towards Ardglass. The map pin marks the roadside layby at Mill Quarter Bay, which is where you leave the car — there is no car park at the reserve itself.
Access to the reserve means walking along the beach and shore, which is often rocky, and parts of it may not always be reachable because of the tides. Check tide times before you travel so you know you have a safe way in and out, and wear suitable footwear.
The reserve is looked after with grazing livestock and ponies, so dogs are not allowed. There are no facilities at all, so bring everything you need and plan toilets around the villages. The ground is uneven coastal terrain, which suits older walkers far better than buggies, and the coast is exposed — check the forecast and dress for wind and rain.
⭐ Wee Adventurers Top Tips

- ⭐Wear sturdy shoes for the rocky shoreline and grassy paths
- ⭐Leave the dog at home — livestock and ponies graze the reserve
- ⭐Take water and snacks with you, as there are no facilities at all
- ⭐The sandy bays make good picnic spots if the weather plays fair
