Full Description
Londonderry Park is the big outdoor space on the Portaferry Road in Newtownards, and it works as a straightforward free day out: a play park, plenty of grass, pitches and paths, and enough room that you never feel on top of other families.
The play park was refurbished as part of a £220,000 investment and it has been done with inclusion in mind, with modern equipment and improved play features rather than a set of tired old swings. Right beside it is a multi use games area, which is where older children tend to end up if they have brought a ball. Just inside the play area there is a toilet block with child changing facilities, which makes a real difference when you are out with a baby or toddler.
If you would rather walk than play, a trim trail runs around the perimeter of the park, and there are internal paths and open green space where scooters, bikes and first balance bikes work well. The park is also home to sports pitches and a cricket pavilion, so on evenings and weekends there is often a match to watch while you stroll.
There is no cafe in the park itself, so bring what you need. Two practical notes: dogs are not allowed in the play area or on the sports pitches and must be kept on a lead on the internal paths and in the car park, and the park is heavily used for sport, so expect the car park to be busy on a Saturday morning or a summer evening.
What You'll Find
The park offers green space, paths and recreation areas for families to enjoy. It works well for a walk, a run around or a quick outdoor stop.
