Full Description
Scrabo Tower is one of those landmarks that children spot from miles away and immediately want to visit. Sitting high above Newtownards, the tower looks like something from a storybook, and the views over Strangford Lough and the surrounding countryside are worth the trip. You can enjoy the grounds and walking routes even when the tower itself isn't open to visitors. The hill and uneven paths make this more of an outdoor exploring adventure than a straightforward buggy stroll.
Scrabo Tower looks like something from a fairytale, standing high above Newtownards with fantastic views across Strangford Lough. It's a lovely landmark to introduce children to, especially when they've been spotting it from the road and want to see it up close. The walk up is part of the adventure, with grassy slopes and paths that reward you with beautiful views once you reach the top. Even if the tower itself isn't open, you can still enjoy the setting and look out across the surrounding countryside. This is more of a hilltop exploring stop than an easy playground visit, so sturdy shoes and a little patience with younger legs are a good idea.
What You'll Find
Families can explore the paths around Scrabo Country Park, walk up towards the tower and enjoy the views from the hill. The tower itself may have limited or changing access, so the outdoor adventure is the most reliable part of the visit.

Before You Visit
The tower and the country park are not the same visit. The park, its woodland trails and the hilltop views are open all year, and the car parks sit a short walk from the tower, but the tower itself is currently closed to visitors.
Toilets at the park are not always open, and the tower's own opening arrangements change from time to time. Check the council's page before you travel rather than relying on a fixed timetable.
Top Tips
- ⭐Bring sturdy shoes for the hill and uneven paths.
- ⭐Don't promise a trip inside the tower without checking opening arrangements.
- ⭐Take a windproof layer; it's exposed at the top.
- ⭐Allow time for younger children to manage the climb.
