What You'll Find

Ardress House is a lovely National Trust property tucked away in the County Armagh countryside, and there's much more here for the kids than just looking around an old house!

One of the highlights for little ones is the traditional farmyard, where they can meet the resident chickens, goats and donkey. There are even little ride-on tractors for the kids to have a go on, along with a children's play area. It's a lovely way for them to see what life on a farm might have looked like years ago.

The house itself dates back to the 1600s, and you can explore the beautiful old rooms and discover how families lived here long ago. Outside, you'll find apple orchards, gardens and plenty of countryside to explore.

If your wee ones enjoy a walk, there's also the Lady's Mile woodland trail. It's a circular walk of around one mile, taking you through the trees with lovely views back towards the house. Keep an eye out for the old oak tree, which is actually older than Ardress House itself!

During the summer months, children can also borrow balance bikes and helmets from visitor reception for free, which is a lovely little extra for younger adventurers.

Ardress is particularly beautiful during apple blossom season in spring and around harvest time in autumn. It's a lovely place for a slower-paced family outing, with a mixture of animals, playtime, history and woodland walks.

Before You Visit

Ardress House has seasonal opening arrangements, and the house, farmyard and walking trails may have different opening days. Check what's available before setting off, especially if you're hoping to see the animals.

The farmyard has cobblestones and some uneven surfaces, so sensible footwear is a good idea, particularly with younger children.

Balance bikes are available during the summer months, but ask at visitor reception when you arrive.

There is old farm machinery around the property, so keep little ones close when exploring the farmyard.
