Step aboard Northern Ireland’s only full-size heritage railway for a family day out filled with vintage trains and railway history. Enjoy a heritage train journey from Downpatrick and explore the museum, historic carriages, model railway and fascinating collection of railway memorabilia.
Wee Ones Will Love...
Climbing aboard a real heritage train, seeing the locomotives up close, dressing up in railway costumes and having a go at driving trains on the model railway. Little train fans will have plenty to keep them interested beyond the train journey itself.
Before You Visit
The railway is run by volunteers and is only open for passenger trains on published running days, so always check the current timetable before setting off. Special events may have different times and ticket arrangements. The museum and Carriage Gallery are normally open when trains are running, while visits outside public running days may sometimes be arranged in advance. Check the official website for current dates, prices, accessibility information and any changes before travelling.
Top Tips
Check the railway’s running calendar before travelling as passenger trains operate on selected dates rather than every weekend. Give yourselves time to explore the museum and Carriage Gallery as well as taking the train — there is much more here than just the journey. On normal running days, admission allows families to travel on the trains throughout the afternoon. Special Easter, Halloween and Christmas experiences can be very popular, so advance booking is recommended.
