Kilkeel's Mourne Esplanade play area gives you a playground with sea air, and that is exactly what makes it worth a stop. It sits on the esplanade close to the harbour, with the beach and the shore only a short walk away, so you can play, then wander down to look at the boats, and finish with a walk along the sand — all without moving the car.

The council has been improving the play area in recent years, with new fencing and upgrades to the junior play area, so it is a well-kept space rather than a forgotten one, and it is one of more than 128 play parks the district maintains.

With the sea on one side and the Mournes behind the town, it is an easy way to fill an hour or two outdoors without spending a thing.

Free to visit and open daily. The play area is on the Mourne Esplanade (BT34 4BP), with the harbour and beach a few minutes' walk away. It is an exposed coastal spot with little shelter, so pack for wind and showers. Parking and toilet provision are not published for the site, so plan to check locally.
